Richard Loomis Obituary

Richard Harry (Dick) Loomis

Of East Sidney

Richard Harry (Dick) Loomis passed away September 23, 2024 at the age of 94. He was born October 27, 1929 to Silas Harry Loomis and Ethel Myers Loomis in Bainbridge, NY.

The family moved to the current farm in East Sidney when Dick was a small child. He attended Unadilla School and graduated in 1947. He was an invaluable member of the baseball team. "Popeye" Loomis also had an impish side and was usually seen egging on school fights and other childhood mischief.

Dick served in the National Guard and was due to ship out to fight in the Korean War when the truce was called. He returned to the family farm and worked his way into full ownership

June 20, 1958, Dick married his sweetheart, Flora Mable Wilber. They worked side by side on the dairy farm for many years. Dick was active in the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and was the first Delaware County Chapter President. He also enjoyed his big Case tractors, at that time they were the biggest in the area. They had 3 daughters, Gail, Marilyn and Betty that also grew up with that strong work ethic. The dairy was sold in 1979, but Dick and Flora continued to cash crop.

During his semi-retirement he continued to enjoy his lifelong passion for deer hunting, including a few trips to Colorado in search of elk. Dick attended many area antique car shows, winning numerous trophies and awards. He boasted that both he and his 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 were all "original parts". He also had a lifelong passion for dogs, including his hunting dogs, his pit bulls and his latest English Shepherd, Beau Jack. Most neighbors remember seeing him walking around the block with his pit Thor who loved to carry the cane in his mouth.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Flora, 3 daughters, Gail (David) Servatius, Frankfort, NY, Marilyn Loomis, Franklin, and Betty (John) Hendricks, Unadilla, NY. He thought of John as a son and he was blessed with 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Erin Kaszycki, Tom Banta, and Matt, Joe and Nick Servatius and also 7 great grandchildren, Olivia, Reece, Nolan, MaKayla, Kyle, Lily and Paul

A private remembrance will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.  Online condolences may be made at:   www.wmaddenfh.com.   Arrangements by the Westcott-Madden Funeral Home 123 Main Street Unadilla.  A MADDEN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.
