John Michael Ahearn

John Michael Ahearn, 78, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, John earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture in 1970. He maintained a lifelong interest in science and the natural world, sharing that enthusiasm with his family.

In 1975, John married Judith Lennon in Summit, New Jersey. He worked for many years as a microbiologist at Schering-Plough in Union, New Jersey, before moving to upstate New York in 1985 to continue his career with Corning Inc. At Corning, John was a respected and valued colleague who organized the company's first Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.

John had a passion for collecting and restoring antiques and was an avid garage sale enthusiast who enjoyed finding unique treasures and thoughtful gifts for family members. John was quick to quote Shakespeare, loved birdwatching, track and field, and reminiscing about the nostalgia of the 50’s and 60’s.

John was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Florence  (nee Michael) Ahearn. He is survived by his loving wife Judith Ahearn; daughter Erin (Steve) Waring; son Brian (Kimberly) Ahearn; son Ted (Angelica) Ahearn; sisters Holly (Debbie) Ahearn; Nancy (Eli) Almaleh; Karen (Rich) Pearlman and Sharon (Jim) Siedliski. He is also survived by grandchildren Nola Waring, Henry and Courtney Ahearn and Elijah Ahearn as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

John will be remembered for his curiosity, knowledge, and love for his family. He will be greatly missed.

 A Funeral Mass will be offered on Mon. June 29, 2026 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s  Church 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
