Jean H. Hunt, 94, of Binghamton and formerly of Unadilla passed away on Sunday evening March 20, 2016 at Susquehanna Nursing Home in Johnson City, NY. She was born on March 9, 1922 to Luther & Carrie (Jenkins) Higley in Trout Creek, NY. She is survived by her 2 sons & daughter-in-law, Phillip Hunt & friend Sylvia Shaner, Lady Lake, FL., James & Amy Hunt, Lancaster, PA., 2 grandsons, Wesley & Megan Hunt, Alexandria, VA., Matthew Hunt, Unadilla and also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers George, Gleason (Pete) and Charles Higley. Her marriage to Walter L. Hunt, Jr. ended in divorce.
Jean graduated from Walton Central School and Lowell Business School (Ridley-Lowell) in Binghamton in the early 1940’s. After WWII, she moved to Unadilla where she was a bookkeeper with D. R. Chambers & Sons for several years. She also worked at J.W. Van Cott & Sons in Unadilla, in a similar position, for a few years in the 1950’s. She moved to Binghamton, NY in 1964 and began a long career as a bookkeeper for various local businesses including several years with Our Press in Chenango Bridge. She retired from fulltime work in 1987 and began a long association with the Broome County Office of the Ageing Work Program, where she took assignments for many governmental and non-profit organizations throughout the Triple Cities. She was very active in church activities; both with the Unadilla Methodist Church and later with the original Centenary United Methodist Church in Binghamton. She was one of the Centenary members that assisted in the formation of the merged Centenary-Chenango United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Unadilla United Methodist Church, or charity of one’s choice in her remembrance.
