James Washburn Obituary

James C. Washburn of Bainbridge, NY passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday October 24, 2023. James was born March 2, 1939 to Phillip Colwell and Ruth (White) Colwell in the town of Portlandville, NY. He was adopted by Harold Washburn in 1958. He married Sandra K Palmer on March 28, 1964. James and Sandra were married for a total of 54 years until her passing in 2018. They raised four children together. James was also preceded by his parents, in-laws, and his younger brother Harold Washburn Jr.  He is survived by his daughters Susan (Ed) McHenry of Sidney, NY, Penny (Bill) Saunders of Afton, NY, Kay (Chris) Currie of Plymouth, NY and one son Steven (Jen Hall) Washburn of Sidney, NY. He is also survived by one sister Janet (Glenn) Jacob of Palmer, AK. After the passing of his wife, James found happiness with a committed partner Patricia Barger. He is also survived by his grandchildren Derrick (Gianna) McHenry, Phillip (Bobbie Baldwin) McHenry, Marcus Currie, Krista (Frank) Currie, Christina Harvey, Aubree Palmer, and Bradley Washburn, along with two great grandchildren Oliver McHenry and Anna Knapp.

Jim was a long-time member of the Sidney area. He graduated from Sidney Central High School in the class of 1957 and was a long-time member of the Sidney Alumni Association. As a student in high school Jim was known for his presence on the football and wrestling teams. Even earning himself the nickname Bell.

Jim served honorably in the US Air Force as a communications equipment specialist from 1958 to 1962. He then went on to own his own businesses, a television repair shop and a local pool hall. Jim enjoyed a good game of pool. Jim and Sandy enjoyed traveling to watch professional players play From Las Vegas to Turning Stone Casino.

Jim finished his working career at Allied Amphenol, as a Junior Engineer for many years. He received awards for some of his work done on the Hubble Telescope and other parts that he implemented and tested (testing being his favorite part).

He spent a lot of time hanging out with his good friend Walt Raymond over at the Raymond television repair shop. They were always working on some kind of gadget or tinkering with this or that. His love for his wife was undeniable, they taught their children what a relationship should be. Jim was a wonderful father. He always tried to include his children in all his home projects. Which helped to teach them to grow into well-functioning Adults.

Graveside Services will be held at Evergreen Hill Cemetery on Fri. November 3, 2023 in Unadilla, NY at 1:00 pm with a luncheon to follow at Club 55, 55 Union St Sidney, NY.   The family will receive friends at the Westcott-Madden Funeral Home 123 Main Street Unadilla on Thursday November 2, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m.  Online condolences may be made  at:   www.wmaddenfh.com.
