George D. Banta III

Of Unadilla

George D. Banta III, 93, of Unadilla, died Mon. Oct. 5, 2015 at Chestnut Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a brief illness.  He was born on May 14, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY to George D. and Helene (Jensen) Banta, Jr. and raised in Garden City.

George married Jean Anderson on Jan. 27, 1945 in Oneonta.  Jean predeceased him in June 2008.

George was a life-long dairy farmer, establishing the Banta Family farm in Unadilla Center with his brother Richard, and later, son Randy.  For over 50 years, George served the Town of Unadilla, first as an assessor, and then as councilman.  He was also on the board of directors for Farm Credit Service in Oneonta and was the former President of the Unadilla Center Cemetery Association.

He is survived by his children, Clifford & Veleda Banta, Unadilla, Connie Marcus, Utica, Peggy Banta, Unadilla, and Randy & Victoria Banta, Unadilla; four grandchildren, Barbara (Don) Pierce, James (Diana) Banta, Gabriel Marcus, and Thomas Banta; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way; sister Jane Winchester, Mt. Upton; brother, Richard Banta, Unadilla; sister-in-law, Shirley Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

George was also predeceased by a sister Helene “Beb” Peterson and her husband, Richard; a brother, Robert and his wife, Shirley (Earl) Banta; and a brother-in-law, Newell Jones.
