Francis Grimes Phelps, Sr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Deposit NY to Dr. Joseph Phelps and Regina Grimes Phelps. He is survived by his loving wife Peggy, son Jay and Allison Phelps, daughter Megan and Ron Allen, and grandchildren Amanda and Alexa Phelps, and Payton and Killian Allen, also brothers-in-law, Mark and Randy Payne with whom he shared a once-a-week get-together for beer to solve world problems.  Fran is also survived by his loving nieces, Grace, Willa, Hana, Rita, and nephew Riley, and many great nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Franny.

Francis's family moved to Edmeston NY, where he attended school until he graduated from Manlius Military School. He enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1962 to 1966 as an aviation electronic technician with Patrol Squadron twenty- two. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) for his service. 

Fran enjoyed collecting coins and loved running.  His favorite times running include the 20 Boilermaker races, with his wife and other “gluttons” for punishments “runners.”  He would play golf with his partners Greg and the Labor Day shoot out with his wife and Pic.  Gambling was another favorite past time and the best times were had in Atlantic City with the Unadilla Boys. 

“Fran Fran the Variety Man,” as he was affectionately known, was a gentleman in business and a friend to all who met him. He loved his store which he ran for 45 years, he always went the extra mile to get his customers what they needed. It was often said if you can't find it at the Village Variety you don’t need it. 

Fran will be sorely missed by everyone he came in contact with but his memory will always bring a smile to our faces.

Fran’s Celebration of Life will be held Sunday June 2, 2024, at the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm.
