Elizabeth M. (Betty) Youngs

With heavy hearts we announce that Betty Youngs passed away in her sleep this morning, September 20, 2024, with her family by her side.

Betty Youngs was born Elizabeth May Northrup on January 29, 1930, to Charles and Bessie (Ward) Northrup in Downsville, NY.  She was raised and lived in several areas of Otsego and Delaware Counties, settling in Unadilla as a young girl. She left school at 16, to work to help her family, working at the Unadilla House as a waitress, dish washer and cook.

She met her future husband, Edwin J. Youngs as a child. They married June 4, 1947. Together they had and raised 4 children, Gloria Ann, Douglas Arthur, Roger O. and Susan Alice. They lived in Unadilla for most of their 66 years together.

After their youngest child was in school, Betty went to work at Welcome Inn, in Sidney, NY, as a waitress, cook and bar tender, and also worked at Keith Clark Calendar Company in Sidney.

Betty was a member and past president of the Rebecca Lodge of Unadilla. She was also an avid bowler. She had more than 1 perfect game at the Thursday night Women’s League at the Unadilla Bowling Alley.

Betty was an exceptional crocheter.  Give her a hook and thread or yarn and she made hats, mittens, scarves, baby blankets, sweaters, dollies, and many afghans.

Betty was predeceased by her Parents, her husband, Edwin, sons Roger and Douglas and Son-in-law Bill Truscott, brother Charles Northrup and sister-in-law Christina (Ruling) Northrup, and Edwin’s sisters and brothers, Alice, Persa, Erma, Jean, Viola, Betty, Leslie and Robert,

She is survived by her daughters Gloria Truscott and Susan (Denny) Whitmore, of Milford, NY and Daughter-in-law Cheryl Youngs of Unadilla and Rio Rico, Arizona.  She is also survived by grandchildren, Jon Youngs, Arizona, Penny & Bill Paolo, Baldwinsville, NY, Stacy Whitmore, Unadilla, NY, Stephanie & Joel Varano, Elysburg, PA, Christine & Rick Sbragia, Rio Rico, Arizona, Gary & Marissa Richards of Virginia and Jason Richards, South Carolina.

Her great-grandchildren are Abigail, Lauren and Ericia Paolo, Moses and Pearl Varano, Victoria Richards and Gavin Youngs. Great great-grandchildren are Lily and Dalia Garrard.

She will be buried in Unadilla Evergreen Cemetery, next to her husband and sons, in the Youngs Family plot.

A special thank you goes out to Brenda Williams for her everlasting heart and care.  Also, to Mary Jeffers for her wonderful care, and to Helios Care for wonderful care and prompt response whenever we called.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 2PM in the Unadilla Evergreen Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Steve Fournier officiating.   No other services will be held, as per Betty’s wishes.
