Doris Canfield Obituary

Doris Jeanne Canfield

Of Unadilla

Doris Jeanne Canfield passed from this life on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025.  After her long and heroic battle with breast cancer, she was welcomed into her heavenly home by a family of angels and wrapped in the loving wisdom that awaits us all. Doris was unwavering in her cancer fight and always found hope, even in her final moments. Cancer never dampened her spirit.  At the end, it took much of her freedom, but not her will to fight.  It took her comfort, but didn’t touch her will to enjoy her life. It took her energy, but not her resolve. There is more than one way to win a battle with cancer, and in so many ways, she remained victorious. If grit and bravery alone could have cured her, she would still be with us.

Doris was an avid gardener and could make even the most complicated plant flourish. An animal lover, Doris was an accomplished equestrian and always surrounded by her beloved animals. We expect she’s probably enjoying many happy wag and purr-filled reunions right now. She was a deeply creative and caring woman, happy to share her gifts with the world in the forms of crocheted baby gifts, afghans, hats, scarves, and ponchos. If Doris couldn’t crochet it, it can’t be made. She loved camping and nature, making it a point to spend as much time as she could outside, usually at her family’s cabin on Wynkoop Brook.

Doris is survived by her two daughters Amanda and Megan but we all know her favorite children were her treasured sons-in-law Jim and Sean. She is survived by her beloved granddaughter, four siblings, Patricia Crist (Steve Crist) of Reidsville, North Carolina, Barbara Maddison (Jim Madison) of Dawsonville, GA, Steve Canfield (Connie Canfield) of Tannersville, NY,  Tim Canfield (Mary Canfield) of Burlingham, NY, her best friend JoAnn of Milan, IL and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Carol Comeau and Len Canfield.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, 170 Main Street on Tuesday, May 6th at 11am. Interment will be private at the will of the family.

Donations may be made in her name to The Unadilla Food Pantry, The Franklin Community Education Foundation, or Delaware Valley Humane Society of Sidney, NY.

After her passing, her generosity of spirit lives on as an organ donor.
