Obituary

Claramae Curtis Mohrien, 92 of Unadilla, New York passed away June 16, 2022 in the care of her children. She had graciously braved COPD for several years.

Born at home on April 17, 1930 to Raymond G. and Minnie Silvey Curtis, tragically Claramae’s  mother died of childbirth complications. Fortunately Ray’s sister, Emma Curtis, selflessly stepped in and became a wonderfully loving mother her entire life to then newborn Claramae and 11 month old sister Kathryn.

First and foremost Claramae, nicknamed “Mike” in her youth, was an amazing, extremely patient mother raising five children with husband Frederick William Mohrien, Jr., known as “Billy”. Their home was always open to relatives and neighbors and was a gathering place for their own children’s friends from the neighborhood and school.

“Mimi”, as her grandchildren affectionately called her, beamed with immense pride and joy at their school events, ball games and recitals. She did not hesitate whenever asked to look after them. At one of the many family gatherings Billy gazed out at all their offspring, grinned and said, “Mike, look at what we’ve done!”

She supported Billy’s silo construction, lightning rod business in any way needed – running for material, showing up at the job site with a forgotten tool or lunch, even physically helping in construction at times.

In her home for many years Claramae lovingly, in their time of need, cared for her aging mother-in-law and later her father.

“Mike” and Billy made marriage look easy, sharing 55 years until 2006 when Billy passed.

Claramae was predeceased by her father, birth mother and “surrogate” mother, by sister Kathryn and her spouse “Mit” Ostrander. She was also predeceased by in laws Lilla and Frederick W. Mohrien, Sr., and sister-in-laws and their spouses, Audrey and Al Farmer (as well as their daughter Linda Oralls) and Lillian and Claude Verble. Half sibling Bob Curtis (Rose) survives, though half siblings Ray, Betty andGeorge, along with half nephew Scott and half niece Penny have all passed.

Surviving are her cherished children: Frederick III (Rick) and Grace Mohrien; Charyll (Sherry) and Scott Underwood; Michael Mohrien and Judy Porter; Susan and Peter Barnhart; Jill and David Kozak.

She thought the world of her 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with another on the way. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews and faithful dachshund “Snoopy”.

The family extends thanks to Claramae’s physician Rani Kapur-Pado and her staff for their caring and support. Thanks also to niece Maggie for looking after Claramae on occasions when immediate family members were unavailable.

Honoring her wishes, there are no services. All who knew Claramae were aware of her love of four legged animals. If one wishes to honor her memory, the family asks donations be made to Delaware

Valley Humane Society, PO Box 182, Sidney, NY 13838.  Online condolences may be made at:   www.wmaddenfh.com.   Arrangements by the Westcott-Madden Funeral Home 123 Main Street Unadilla.  A MADDEN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.
