Charlies M. “Tyke” Safford

Charles “Tyke” Safford passed away on Tues. May 14, 2024, at his residence in Unadilla, NY at the age of 70. He was born September 22, 1953. He was the 5th of 10 children. He is survived by his sons, Matthew (Holly) Safford of Jersey City, NJ, Rex (Ashley) Safford of Franklin, and daughter Jade Safford of Otego along with 6 grandchildren.  He is survived by siblings Wayne (Cheryl) Cotten of Unadilla, Wilma Cotten of Bainbridge, and Pamela (Richard) King of Wentzville, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by in death by his son Jeremiah Safford, his parents, Willard (step-father) and Altamae Cotten. He was also preceded in death by 5 brothers, Robert Safford Jr., Thomas Safford Sr., Douglas Safford, Carl Safford, Leird Cotten and 1 sister, Roberta Larnerd.

Tyke served in the army as a young man. He made his living in several ways over the years working for the Town of Sidney, Amphenol, and eventually going into business with his brother Carl as a painter. He continued to paint until 2022 when his doctor told him that he should no longer climb ladders.

His world centered around his companion Ruby, a dachshund, whom he spoiled.  He loved his children, grandchildren and siblings but many times had a hard time expressing those feelings.

He enjoyed muscle cars, motorcycles and tinkering around with whatever needed fixing. He also enjoyed trolling garage sales for treasures.

Tyke was willing to do anything for anybody and he will be sorely missed.
