Of Guilford

On Saturday, October 24th, 2015, Thomas E. Safford, Sr. 64, of Guilford, NY, decided it was time to truck it on up to the highway in the sky.  Tom was born November 24, 1950, in Oneonta, NY, to Willard and Altamae Cotten.  He is survived by his wife, Emma (Neidlinger) of 37 years, his sons and daughters in-law, Adam and Jennifer Safford, Thomas and Shannon Safford, Jr.; his daughters and son in-law Melissa and Joshua Lawrence, Carrie Safford, and Teresa Turner and family; brothers Robert, Carl, and Tyke Safford; Leird and Wayne Cotten; sisters Pam and Wilma Cotten.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren as well as his faithful four legged trucking partner Lily.  He was predeceased by his daughters Vicky and Megan Safford; sister Roberta Safford and brother Douglas Safford.  

He attended Oneonta and Sidney Schools but soon found his true passion in truck driving.  After a few years of driving for others, Tom purchased his own truck and continued to drive for himself through 2010.  One of his proudest achievements was earning North American's Vanguard Driver performance award five times.  During 40-plus years of driving, he often took time to mentor family and friends.  Tom taught by example more than in words, helped others, and gave to others.  There were many times over the years the Safford's cared for others, provided jobs, food, etc.  Tom never met a person in need that he wasn't willing to help.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, riding motorcycle, NASCAR and driving his truck. 

The family would like to say a special thanks to all those who helped with support, assistance, transportation, meals, hospital visits and general moral support over these past few years of Tom's medical journey. It was a bumpy ride and we sincerely appreciate everyone's help.

Memorial Services will be held at the Guilford United Methodist Church on Sat. at 1 p.m.  Rev. Barbara Ibarra, Pastor will officiate.  Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Guilford.  The family will receive friends at the Guilford United Methodist Church on Sat. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guilford United Methodist Church, 1277 County Rte. 35, Guilford NY 12780.   On-line condolences may be made at:   www.wmaddenfh.com.  Arrangements by the Westcott-Madden Funeral Home 123 Main Street Unadilla.
